Last Sunday, the 18th of February, a group of Fawkner locals (and a few ring-ins) went down to the Fawkner Bowling Club and put the first plants into the soil.
It feels like it’s taken a long time to get to this point but now that it’s started, I feel like it’s going to progress really quickly.
We’d firstly like to thank all of the people who came on Sunday and did the last bit of clearing of the mound of grass from the corner of the green so that we could put the first bed of the Children’s Garden in. We’d also like to thank all of the people who’ve come to the previous working bees before Christmas and in the days leading up to Sunday. It took quite a bit of faith in the project to come down and pull grass out of paving so we really appreciate it.
We’d also like to thank Katherine Marsh for the amazing job she did designing the beautiful fliers that we stuck around the place. Katherine also worked with Impact Digital (http://impactdigital.com.au) who kindly donated the printing of the fliers.
We’d also like to thank Frank at Reynard’s Meats who gave us a great deal on the meat that Zoe Rowley then turned into a lovely dinner for everyone. Thanks Zoe.
We’d also like to thank the excellent people at CoDesign Studio (https://codesignstudio.com.au) especially those who not only came down to see how we were going, but then also stayed and helped us shift coir logs and compost. You folks are ace.
We couldn’t do any of this without the assistance, input, and work of the Fawkner Bowling Club so thanks especially to them for letting us into the space.
Going ahead, we hope to be in the garden on a fortnightly basis for working bees and workshops. The first of these will be presented by myself on the 4th of March from 10am-12pm and will be on Growing in Fawkner Soils.
Following this on the 11th of March we’ll be running a workshop presented by Elspeth Brock, a wonderful garden educator (and Fawkner local) on Companion Planting.
We’ll post details soon of how you can book in for each of these.
Further down the track, we’re also planning a Garden Launch on the 22nd of April to celebrate the progress that we’ve made so far.
Looking forward to seeing you all in the garden soon.
